Matthew Tirrrell is a member of the American Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and also is the Dean and Pritzker Director of the Institute for Molecular Engineering of the University of Chicago and the Deputy Director of Science at Argonne National Laboratory.

As a pioneering researcher in the fields of biomolecular engineering and nanotechnology, Tirrell specializes in the manipulation and measurement of the surface properties of polymers, materials that consist of long, flexible chain molecules. His research interests also include novel polymeric materials for anti-fouling membranes as well as nutrient recovery from waste water.
